Post Doc in Cultural Sociology

The University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a one-year position as Post Doc in the field of Cultural Sociology at the Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics, Campus Esbjerg. The position is vacant from August 1st, 2018 or soon thereafter.

The Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics is part of the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences. The department is located in Esbjerg and employs some 50 members of staff. Research in the Department is organized in three research groups, and the announced position will be part of the Sociology Research Group.

This research of this group is mainly but not exclusively focused on three main themes, namely:

  1. Civil society,
including sub-themes such as social capital, trust, voluntary associations, religious groups, integration, migration, state-citizen relations.
  2. Professions, organizations and practices,
including sub-themes as norms, values, logics and management, institutional logics, management and digitalization.
  3. Rural life and rural development,
including rural-urban relations, de-population, associational life in the rural areas, discourses on rural areas, and policies affecting the rural areas.

The diversity of topics and perspectives that characterizes the work of the research group readily lends itself to methodological pluralism, with commonly used research approaches and methods including case studies, ethnographic field work (interviews, focus groups, participant-observation), surveys, regression analysis and document analysis.

For this position, we welcome applicants with a Ph.D. degree in sociology, anthropology or a related field. The successful applicant should account for his or her research plans and not least for how they fit within the themes of the Sociology Research Group. The applicant will have to qualify according to the departments qualification guidelines.

The successful applicant is expected to play an active role in the Sociology Research Group, to be able to work collaboratively with colleagues in this and other possibly research groups at the Department, and to be able to conduct and publish research on an internationally competitive level. As the research group is engaged in many externally funded projects, the successful applicant is also expected to participate in writing applications for research funding. She/he will enjoy the benefits of working in an inspiring and open research environment.

The teaching of the research group covers courses Sociological Theory and Methodology on an undergraduate as well as a graduate level. The teaching load is equivalent to approximately 4-5 hours per semester week. The Department provides teaching for degrees in General Business Economics (B.Sc.), Marketing and Innovation (M.Sc.), Sports and Event Management (B.Sc. and M.Sc.), Environmental and Resource Management (M.Sc.), Sociology and Cultural Analysis (B.Sc and M.Sc.) as well as Diploma and MBA programs in business.
