Located just outside Vienna, the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) is an international institute dedicated to basic research and graduate education, where we transcend the traditional boundaries between disciplines and foster cutting-edge research in natural and mathematical sciences.
IST Austria offers excellent infrastructure, an English-speaking, internationally diverse community, and proximity to Vienna, consistently ranked as one of the most desirable cities to live in in the world.
The President of IST Austria is Thomas A. Henzinger, a leading computer scientist and former professor of the University of California at Berkeley and EPFL Lausanne in Switzerland. The Institute was inaugurated in 2009 and will grow to about 90 research groups by 2026.
IST Austria offers one single joint graduate program for all PhD students. The graduate school trains a new generation of researchers who are able to approach scientific questions from different angles and are fluent in the languages of both the experimental sciences and the analytical sciences. The PhD program is divided into two phases. During the first phase, students carry out projects with three different research groups and attend courses from the entire range of scientific fields represented at IST Austria. After a qualifying exam, students enter the second phase of the program, during which they focus on research towards a doctoral thesis. After a successful thesis defense, the student receives a PhD degree from IST Austria. The annual application deadline to the program is January 8. The program starts the following September 15. http://www.ist.ac.at/graduate-school
