Professorship (§ 36 HG NRW) in “Traffic Safety / Reliability”

(legal basis: W 2 LBesG NRW).

The position will be based in the School of Mechanical Engineering and Safety Engineering.

The position is to be taken up as soon as possible.

Expectations:

The future holder of the position should represent the subject of traffic safety / reliability in research and teaching. The professorship should focus on the following fields of research:

  • Safety and reliability of non-automated and automated traffic systems,
  • Functional safety and system reliability, in particular in the field of automotive engineering on the subject of automated and networked vehicles in the driver-vehicle environment,
  • Safety concepts for urban transport systems with heterogeneous transport structures,
  • Safety concepts for collective traffic dynamics,
  • Technical reliability of plants, products and systems, in particular with the inclusion of condition monitoring systems and predictive maintenance strategies,
  • Simulation, computer-aided methods and test strategies for validating and evaluating the safety and reliability of technical products and systems.

We are looking for a committed individual with an international track record in both traffic safety and reliability. A university degree in mathematics or computer science and a subsequent doctorate in the field of the advert are expected. Applicants are also expected to have:

  • Scientific experience in the field of traffic safety and reliability beyond the doctorate, particularly in the research fields outlined,
  • Experience in the acquisition and processing of third-party funded research projects,
  • Experience in Franco-German research cooperation in the field of tendering,
  • Experience in teaching and supervising students.

The responsibilities of the professorship include the design and implementation of courses in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes offered by the school, the supervision of theses, laboratories and work placements as well as the active promotion of young researchers. A willingness to contribute to the further development of the school’s profile, in particular in the organisation and expansion of cooperation with universities and other research institutions in France and in the establishment of a French-language teaching programme, is a prerequisite.

Requirements:

Besides pedagogical suitability, which has to be proven by appropriate previous experience or, in exceptional cases, demonstrated by excellent performance during the appointment procedure, the applicant is expected to have a particular aptitude for scientific work substantiated by the outstanding quality of a doctorate. Further scientific achievements must be demonstrated additionally and will be evaluated exclusively and comprehensively during the appointment procedure. The requirements for appointment to a first professorship include junior professorships, habilitations, employment as a research assistant at a university or at a non-university research institution and scientific positions in business, in administration or another social field in Germany or abroad.

The successful candidate is expected to actively support academic self-governance at the university.
