Postdoc specialising in mathematics or natural sciences for Hi‑Acts "Physics-informed AI"

Remuneration Group 13 | Limited: 31.12.2026 | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FSPO002/2024 | Deadline: 31.07.2024 | Full-time/Part-time | Remote work possible

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The "Helmholtz Innovation Platform for Accelerator-based Technologies and Solutions" (Hi‑Acts) is an innovation platform with the aim of bringing accelerator technologies into industrial and medical applications – e.g. as future applications in product development or quality assurance for the semiconductor industry, or as new product solutions in medical technology. Collaboration between researchers, industry, clinics and market and innovation experts is crucial in order to accelerate innovation breakthroughs and simplify access to large-scale research facilities. In the "Physics informed Al" technology lab, we want to enable the broad availability of X-ray imaging methods in the industrial environment. In this lab, algorithms for solving inverse problems in X-ray imaging (e.g. X-ray tomography and holography) are developed. Working with and using machine learning methods, especially deep learning, is intended to align small, compact (laser-plasma-based) sources to performance levels suitable for the application. More information: www.hi-acts.de/de

About your role:

  • Responsible for the development of machine learning algorithms for solving inverse problems in the field of X-ray imaging (tomography, X-ray holography, noise reduction)
  • Joint implementation of activities in interdisciplinary teams with industry and network partners, other technology labs of the platform and with the platform management
  • Documentation, preparation and presentation of relevant information on project progress and lab topics for target groups and platform partners (e.g. as part of project meetings, events, workshops or conferences/trade fairs)

About you:

  • Completed scientific university education with a doctorate in the field of mathematics or natural sciences or comparable field or equivalent expertise, skills and experience
  • Knowledge in the field of inverse problems such as noise reduction, deconvolution, tomography, phase problem in holography
  • Initial experience in using deep learning algorithms to solve inverse problems
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative machine learning solutions in the context of applied accelerator solutions
  • Good knowledge of HPC, for example based on Python and/or Cuda or comparable programming languages (desirable)
  • Knowledge of or interest in advanced statistical methods and analyses (desirable)
  • Good knowledge of English (German desirable)

Good reasons to join:
