Position Overview:

IE University’s School of Science and Technology is seeking a senior leader to serve as the Chief Scientist for the Healthcare Impact Xcelerator Lab (IX Lab). This is a unique, high-impact role designed for a seasoned expert with both deep academic credentials and substantial business experience in applying advanced technologies to the healthcare sector. The Chief Scientist will lead innovation and research initiatives, build partnerships with industry, and spearhead education and knowledge transfer programs that address the evolving challenges and opportunities within healthcare.

The successful candidate will have a strong technical background in computer science, engineering, or data science with proven expertise in the healthcare sector. They will have a clear vision for how emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning, robotics, digital health platforms, biotechnology, and data analytics can transform healthcare delivery, improve patient outcomes, and optimize operational efficiency across the industry.

As the leader of the Healthcare IX Lab, the Chief Scientist will oversee both internal research teams and external collaborations to deliver cutting-edge solutions, educational programs, and knowledge transfer projects for our corporate partners and sponsors. This role involves strategic leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a focus on driving tangible results through technology adoption in the healthcare ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Healthcare IX Lab, shaping its vision, strategic goals, and direction, with a focus on the business applications of technology in healthcare.
  • Develop and oversee gateway education programs and executive training tailored to the evolving needs of the healthcare industry, addressing topics such as digital transformation, data-driven healthcare, and AI in medicine.
  • Cultivate and manage partnerships with industry sponsors, healthcare organizations, and technology companies to develop knowledge transfer projects and applied consultancy services that drive impact in the healthcare sector.
  • Direct research and development initiatives that leverage AI, machine learning, health informatics, and robotics to create innovative solutions for healthcare challenges.
  • Lead interdisciplinary teams comprising internal faculty, external experts, and industry professionals to deliver high-quality, impactful projects.
  • Stay at the forefront of healthcare technology trends, anticipating future developments, and ensuring the lab remains a leader in innovation.
  • Act as a thought leader in the field, representing IE University at industry conferences, academic forums, and in engagements with corporate partners.
  • Manage the lab’s financials, ensuring successful funding from industry partners and sponsors, and overseeing project execution and delivery.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Medicine, Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a closely related field, with significant experience in healthcare technology and digital health.
  • Extensive experience in the healthcare industry, either through industry research, consulting, or leading technology initiatives in healthcare organizations.
  • Proven expertise in AI, machine learning, data analytics, or other emerging technologies applied to healthcare, with a track record of successful technology deployment.
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and managing large, complex projects with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to engage industry leaders, secure sponsorships, and develop partnerships.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Spanish is desirable but not mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in designing and delivering executive education programs or leading corporate training initiatives in technology and healthcare.
  • Familiarity with regulatory challenges in healthcare technology, such as data privacy (HIPAA, GDPR), AI ethics, and patient safety.
  • A strong professional network in the global healthcare industry, with connections to healthcare providers, biotech companies, pharmaceutical firms, and regulatory bodies.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure research funding and sponsorship for applied projects, particularly in collaboration with industry sponsors.
  • Visionary leadership with a focus on how future technologies (e.g., personalized medicine, wearable health devices, telemedicine, and robotic surgery) will reshape the healthcare landscape.
