Subject description

The subject area encompasses theoretical and experimental methods for managing groundwater flow and associated physicochemical processes in the bedrock. Coupled processes include hydrological, mechanical, and thermal processes, as well as mass transport and chemical reactions relevant to the design of various facilities, such as dam foundations, tunnels, rock chambers, utilization of energy storage, water resources, and geological storage. The subject also includes innovative methods for managing water flow, such as by grouting. The applied main goal of the subject area is to develop fundamental and applied knowledge for the safety and sustainable functioning of critical infrastructure in the bedrock, as well as for environmental impact assessment and regulatory processes.

Duties

Duties include research, teaching, and supervision within the subject area. A desirable research profile involves generating new knowledge about coupled processes, specifically including hydromechanical processes, for addressing groundwater issues related to geoenergy, energy storage, and geological storage, while teaching may cover a broader range of topics.

The position includes teaching at the first, second and third cycle level. In addition to developing and delivering lectures, seminars, and field/laboratory activities, the role involves course administration, course responsibility, and examination. The Associate Professor is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within three years. If needed a plan for language training will be set at the time of hire.

The Associate Professor is expected to establish a research activity with a clear emphasis on collaboration with societal actors. This includes seeking external research funding and supervising doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. The Associate Professor is also expected to build a strong international, academic network and collaborate within the department and more broadly at KTH.

Duties also include actively participating in academic work at the department/school/KTH, potentially with responsibilities and management tasks, and contributing to the academic environment, as well as achieving KTH's sustainability and climate goals.

Eligibility

Those eligible to be employed as associate professor are persons who have:

1. have completed a doctorate or possess equivalent scientific expertise or some other professional expertise that is of significance with regard to the subject content of the employment and the duties that are required of the employment, and
2. demonstrated pedagogical expertise.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, section 1.2., apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is that the applicant has

• scientific expertise in the subject field, demonstrated, for example, through the ability to obtain research funding.
• the ability to combine competencies in hydrogeology, mechanics, mass transport, and chemistry relevant to rock processes and apply them to the construction of infrastructure in the rock, demonstrated, for example, through the publication of related articles in scientific journals.
• pedagogical expertise in hydrogeology, with expertise in the subject area.

 Of second highest importance that the applicant has

• the ability to cooperate with the outside community for mutual exchange and having acted to ensure that the knowledge and skills found at the university benefit society.
• expertise in developing and leading activities and staff. For that purpose, the individual is to be knowledgeable about diversity and equal opportunity issues, particularly gender equality.

 It is also important that the applicant has

• administrative expertise.
