Mathematics education and research at Tampere University are hosted by the Computing Sciences unit and the Faculty of Information Technology and Communications. We conduct strong research in the areas of mathematics including

  • Applications of algebraic topology
  • Inverse problems
  • Mathematical logic
  • Mathematical systems theory and functional analysis

Our personnel consists of 5 professors, 15 lecturers/instructors, and roughly 30 research staff members including post-doctoral researchers and doctoral students. To complement and strengthen our research profile, we invite applications for an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Discrete Mathematics (Tenure Track). We are especially seeking candidates with an excellent track record in the area of mathematical logic. Expertise on applications is considered an additional strength.

The successful candidate is expected to lead world-class scientific research and to demonstrate their potential in securing substantial research funding. They will also participate in teaching and supervision of students in the area of mathematical logic.  We are seeking an active member to our academic community and value potential for local research collaboration. The more detailed tenure-track objectives will be set based on the level and previous experience of the candidate.

Requirements

You should have a doctoral degree in the field of mathematics and an excellent track record of academic research in the field of discrete mathematics. You need to be fluent in English in order to succeed in the required tasks.

Assistant Professor

We require:

  • an applicable doctoral degree
  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position

Associate Professor

We require:

  • an applicable doctoral degree
  • a record of independent scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • ability to lead a research group and a record of winning external research funding
  • a record of international scholarly activity

Professor

We require:

  • an applicable doctoral degree
  • high-level scholarly expertise and an international level of achievement
  • experience of leading scientific research activities
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction
  • a record of winning external research funding
  • a record of international scholarly activity.

We offer

Initial appointment for assistant professor and for associate professor is for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured member of the faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well-supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to faculty positions. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees. Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4300–5000 EUR/month and for an Associate Professor approximately 5000–5800 EUR/month, for a professor approximately 6000–7000 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.

  • List of publications according to Academy of Finland guidelines. Please indicate your ten most important publications with links to the publications or the publication as a PDF file if they are not accessible online.
  • Teaching portfolio (according to Tampere university guidelines)
  • A letter of motivation in which you set out the reasons why you are particularly suited to it and how you would develop and strengthen the research and teaching in mathematics at Tampere University. (max. 2 pages)
  • A research plan (max. 5 pages)
  • Copy of doctoral diploma in original language. If original language is other than Finnish, Swedish or English, please provide an official translation in one of those languages.
  • The names, positions and contact details of two referees who can support your application.
