The Department of Chemistry, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking to recruit two (2) Doctoral Researcher in Chemistry starting on August 1st, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter for a maximum of four years.

Department of Chemistry is known for high-level research and teaching. The main strength areas of the department are chemical nanoscience, functional molecules and materials, chemistry in circular economy, and chemistry education. The department is a member of the Nanoscience Center of University of Jyväskylä, which promotes interdisciplinary research projects in nanoscience. The department has world-class laboratory infrastructure and large-scale computational resources. The positions will be assigned to selectet research groups in the department, which you can read about in more detail on our department’s website. You must contact your potential supervisor in advance to agree on a research topic. In the application form, please state clearly the name of the supervisor you contacted and whose group you are applying to as a Doctoral Researcher and describe the agreed research topic. The following group leaders are not recruiting new doctoral researchers this year and their groups cannot be applied to: Groenhof Gerrit, Pettersson Mika, Pihko Petri, Shawulienu Kezilebieke, Tatu Kumpulainen.


Who we are looking for

The tasks of a Doctoral Researcher focus on research aiming at the completion of a doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks, and other related tasks to these. The duties, qualification requirements, and the language skills of Doctoral Researchers are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines (Doctoral Students). A good command of English is required. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

The eligible candidate has, or is about to obtain, a suitable degree and background in natural sciences. In addition, the Doctoral Researcher must have a permission for post-graduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä. If the applicant does not have permission for post-graduate studies, it must be applied with a separate application procedure from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection for the position.

The annual salary will be approximately 29,000 EUR for the Doctoral Researcher (gross income). With progress of thesis work, the salary will be revised in accordance with the Collective Agreement of Finnish Education Employers.

  2. An informal motivation/cover letter (maximum 1 page) focusing on the applicant’s research interests related to the department’s strength areas and research groups. Additionally, clearly state the reason or motivation on why you are applying to the Chemistry Department of the University of Jyväskylä.
  3. Relevant certificates/diplomas.
