The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.

We are recruiting a

Postdoctoral researcher

interested in studying the surfaces of particles and droplets relevant to atmospheric science to join us in the Center for Atmospheric Research at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.

About the job

The postdoctoral researcher position is part of the Research Council of Finland funded project "Surface chemistry of realistic atmospheric particles and droplets investigated with novel X-ray methods," led by senior research fellow Dr. Jack J. Lin.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will carry out research work, including at advanced light sources (synchrotron and free-electron laser facilities), within a research team, and publish research results in leading international scientific journals.

Who are you?

Requirements for the successful applicant:

  • A doctoral degree in atmospheric science, aerosol science, physical chemistry, physics, chemistry, meteorology, or a related field. The degree must be completed prior to the beginning of employment.
  • Written and spoken English language skills that are necessary for publication in high-level international, peer-reviewed journals and writing competitive research and funding proposals.

Highly advantageous skills or background:

  • Knowledge of atmospheric and aerosol science, physical chemistry, aqueous solution chemistry and thermodynamics, or X-ray spectroscopy.
  • Scientific programming knowledge such as MATLAB, IGOR Pro, Fortran, Python, or similar.
  • Experience working in a wet chemistry lab and with analytical instruments, especially instruments related to aerosol measurements or X-ray spectroscopy.

We also appreciate:

  • Experience with website design and communications outreach through social media.
  • Experience using open-access archives and platforms such as GitHub and Zenodo for the publication of research data sets and code.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for an initial 2 years, starting 1 February 2025 or as agreed.

The salary will be based on level 5 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approximately 3500-3800 € per month before taxes.  The position has a 6 month trial period.

How to apply?

Submit your application by the 1st of December 2024 (23:59 Finnish local time) through our recruitment system.

The application should be written in English and include the following:

  1. A cover letter (1 page maximum). The letter should briefly summarize the applicant’s background, explain why the applicant is a good fit for the position, and state what the applicant wishes to achieve during the postdoctoral period.
  2. Curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum) following the template from the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity: https://tenk.fi/en/advice-and-materials/template-researchers-curriculum-vitae. Please also append a list of publications to the CV, which is not included in the page limit.
