The Faculty of Science at the University of Turku is inviting applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in Hydroinformatics and Fluvial Geomorpholgy open in The Digital Waters Flagship (DIWA) at the Geology Section of Department of Geography and Geology.

An Assistant Professor first serves for a fixed term of 3-5 years and an Associate Professors for 2-4 years before being evaluated for an upgrade to become a full professor. The title and the position in the tenure track will be tailored to the qualifications and accomplishments of the successful applicant.

The position of Assistant / Associate Professor in Hydroinformatics and Fluvial Geomorphology is located within the flagship research project "Digital Waters" at the Department of Geography and Geology, specifically within the Geography section. The professorship's field encompasses hydroinformatics and fluvial geomorphology, with a primary focus on new digital measurement methods and their application in hydro- and morphodynamic modelling in both natural and urban environments. Additionally, the Assistant / Associate Professor is expected to be proficient in fluvial geomorphology, as well as in geoinformatics and remote sensing methods as part of hydrological research and societal applications. Research achievements, especially in these areas, demonstrated through publications, are highly valued. The Assistant / Associate Professor will supervise and provide teaching, particularly in the flagship doctoral pilot (comprising 60 doctoral researchers in the consortium, with 16 doctoral researchers at the University of Turku), supervise postdoctoral researchers within the flagship, and engage in international cutting-edge research as part of the Digital Waters research community. The selected Assistant / Associate Professor will lead their own research group, with 1-2 postdoctoral researchers and 2-4 doctoral researchers. The professorship contributes to strengthening the research and teaching of physical geography and geoinformatics at the University of Turku.

The employment will commence according to the contract, but no later than January 1, 2025.

The associate/assistant professor
 

Conducts and guides scientific research:

  • It is expected that the candidate will collaborate with other research groups, establish and lead an independent research team, and acquire domestic and international research funding.

Provides research-based teaching:

  • Additionally, the candidate is expected to actively participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and contribute to their development.

Supervises theses at all academic levels.

Keeps abreast of scientific developments.

Engages in societal interaction and international cooperation in their field.

Participates in administrative tasks assigned to them by the university.

We expect the applicant to have expertise in hydroinformatics and fluvial geomorphology, including digital measurement methods and their application in hydro- and morphodynamic modeling in both natural and urban environments. Additionally, the applicant is expected to be proficient in fluvial geomorphology, as well as in geoinformatics and remote sensing methods as part of hydrological research and societal applications. Research achievements, particularly in these areas, demonstrated through scientific publications, are highly valued.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a fixed-term Associate / Assistant professorship (tenure track) depending on his/ her previous academic merits in research, teaching, and academic leadership and societal interaction.

  • For the position of Associate Professor, we emphasize a proven international track record of scientific research, teaching experience and societal interaction.
  • For the position of Assistant Professor, we seek proactive researchers and teachers beyond their post doc phase yet still at their early academic career, and who already have a proven track record of scientific research.

Salary and trial period

The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities for teaching and research personnel.  The salary shall be determined when drawing up the employment contract.

The position is subject to a six-month trial period.
