Job description

The Power Electronics and Electromagnetic Compatibility Group within the department Electrical Engineering has a vacancy for a Ph.D. researcher on Effective aperture of openings of systems in reverberant environments within the EU Horizon 2020 Marie Skiodowska-Curie Project NEPIT - Network for Evaluation of Propagation and Interference Training.

Unintentional antennas such as openings, like windows, or holes for ventilation, can act as an antenna, allowing EM energy to penetrate opening and  these unintentional antennas can radiate in all directions, and over a very, very, very large frequency range but the Electromagnetic effect are undesired therefore we would like that you help us to solve that problem!

The objectives are to develop validated models to predict EM coupling into and out of (random) apertures (and random wires) using Monte-Carlo deterministic and statistical techniques for EM waves. Validation via comparison to known antennas and canonical structures and measurements. Key application to airplane structures and automotive windows and openings, but model shall be general for any complex, electrically large (w.r.t. wavelength) apertures.

The expected results are to increased knowledge (disseminated), and widely accepted models to be used by industry to estimate the risk of EMI, which can be embedded in current EM tools as applied within industry.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and curiosity-driven researcher;

  • You have a master in Electrical engineering, physics, mathematics
  • You have, or are about to get, a master’s degree in electromagnetic compatibility, telecommunications, electromagnetics or a related field;
  • You have a background in physical electronics, analytical mathematics and simulation;
  • You are an excellent teammate in an enthusiastic and hardworking group of scientists and engineers working on a joint assignment;
  • You are creative, like to push boundaries, and are highly motivated to address major science challenges in EMC;
  • You are proficient in English and able to collaborate intensively with industrial and academic parties in regular meetings and work visits.

Our offer

As a PhD researcher at the University of Twente, you will be appointed on a fulltime position for four years, with a qualifier in the first year, within a very stimulating scientific environment;

  • The university offers a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues;
  • Salary and conditions are in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU);
  • You will receive a salary ranging from around €2.770,- gross per month at the start to around €3.539,- in the fourth year;
  • Excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus of 8.3% and a solid pension scheme;
  • A training program in which you and your supervisor will make up a plan for additional suitable education and supervision;
  • We encourage a high degree of responsibility and independence, while collaborating with close colleagues, researchers and other university staff.

Information and application

Are you interested after reading this vacancy? Please apply with an application/motivation letter, a detailed CV (Europass), a publication list, contact details of referees, and an academic transcript of B.Sc. and M.Sc. education. The selection procedure includes an interview and scientific presentation.

We will interview candidates continuously, and if we selected a good candidate, we will close the vacancy.

About the organisation

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) uses mathematics, electronics and computer technology to contribute to the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). With ICT present in almost every device and product we use nowadays, we embrace our role as contributors to a broad range of societal activities and as pioneers of tomorrow's digital society. As part of a people-first tech university that aims to shape society, individuals and connections, our faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad, and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. Our research has a high profile both in the Netherlands and internationally. It has been accommodated in three multidisciplinary UT research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centre and Digital Society Institute.
