Who We Are

Here at Leeds Beckett, we are a modern, professional university with ambition.

Based in the vibrant city of Leeds, the biggest financial district outside of London, we have two campuses – one based in the heart of the city, and one in the nearby suburb of Headingley.

We are proud of our recent accolades inducing:

• 4^th in the UK for graduate employment (DLHE 14/15);
• 84% for overall satisfaction in National Student Survey 2016;
• 1^st in the world for technology, 2^nd in the world for virtual learning and 3^rd in the world for laboratories in the independent Student Barometer survey.

Our Impact

We make a significant impact on the economy, contributing an estimated £520 million annually to the economy every year. With a 190-year history of education, which began with the founding of the Leeds Mechanics Institute in 1824, we have around 3,300 staff and more than 25,000 students studying on our programmes in Leeds from over 90 countries around the world.

Research

Through the Research Excellence Framework 2014 we demonstrated our progress on expanding and enhancing our research base through our Institutes and Centres, creating a strong and sustainable research environment for our staff and students and evidencing the impact we make through our applied research.

In terms of the 'research power' calculation applied in the previous assessment in 2008, which accounts for both the quality and the quantity of research, we were ranked second in the country for Sport and Exercise Science, Leisure and Tourism – up from third in 2008 - with 59% of the research submitted being assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent. We also came in the top ten in the Communication, Culture and Media Studies, Library and Information Management unit. Our results for the Architecture, Built Environment and Planning unit – which we entered for the first time - were also noteworthy, with 37% of research being rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
