At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy Esbjerg, a position as Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Electro fuel/Power-to-X Processes for Future Energy Systems is available. The position is open for appointment from 1st March 2023 or soon hereafter.

AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg. The tenureship is in Esbjerg, which brands itself as the Danish Energy Metropolis and is the Danish center for offshore energy activities, hosting several large-scale Power-to-X plants in the coming years. Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent. The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has around 300 employees of many nationalities, with 28 being administrative and 17 technical staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has some 50-70 guest researchers from around the world. 

AAU Energy offers highly qualified candidates an attractive career path via tenure-track. Tenure-track assistant professors are appointed for a period of six years with the prospect of performance-based promotion to a tenured position as Associate Professor. Tenure-track assistant professors are expected to have international academic standing, demonstrating acclaimed competitive research, and/or have a recognized high potential for future impact.

The tenure track Assistant Professor will be working from the Energy AAU Esbjerg Campus, taking a leading role in the establishment of a satellite hub to AAU Energy’s world-class cyber-physical system modelling capabilities (see more here: https://www.energy.aau.dk/laboratories/smart-energy-systems-laboratory) with special focus on integration of PtX technologies in the future energy system. Significant investments into research hardware and facilities are already being made, and it is expected that significant funding will be directed towards this area in the future. 

Research areas will be within modelling, optimization and control of processes broadly within PtX and cross-sector coupling, for example electrochemistry, thermochemistry, catalysis, heating/cooling networks and assets, electric transmission and distribution systems renewable energy production and storage systems, etc. Grid and market integration is also in scope for PtX technologies and systems.

Teaching will primarily be in energy engineering, but also in other study programs at the University.

The city of Esbjerg will play a major role in the green transition of the Danish energy system, and it is the ambition that this cyber-physical satellite hub will engage deeply with implementation of full-scale PtX installations, by providing research-based decision support while leading the state-of-the-art in scenario modelling and real time simulations of sector-coupled energy systems.

The candidate should have a sound background in a relevant area of energy engineering or similar e.g., mechanical, electrical, control or chemical engineering, and preferably relevant work experience from industry or academia. The candidate should preferably also document a basic understanding of electric power systems and grid-connected services. Irrespective of the academic background, the candidate must document how his previous research has been applied to energy processes, technologies, or systems. Modelling experience and competences will be prioritized, as well as documented skills in laboratory work related to the real-time simulation and implementation of process control in control/hardware-in-the-loop applications. 

As it is expected that the successful candidate will take a leading role in establishing the cyber-experimental satellite as well as building a strong research group around this, strong collaborative skills combined with personal ambition and drive are key ingredients in making it successful.

Qualification requirements:

Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position (appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).

The application must contain the following: 

  • A statement outlining your reasons for applying, and intentions and visions with, the position.
  • Your curriculum vitae, including personal data, educational background, scientific qualifications, dissemination skills, participation in committees and boards, and additional qualifications relevant for the position.
  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD). On request you could be asked for an official English translation.
  • A complete list of publications.
  • Publications you wish to be considered by the assessment committee. You may attach up to 5 publications.
  • A specification of your teaching qualifications relative to the teaching portfolio. If this is not enclosed you must include an explanation for its absence.
  • References/recommendations.

In tenure-track employment, AAU attaches particular importance to:

  • The candidate has a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications
  • The candidate can demonstrate a high degree of autonomy in their previous education and employment path
  • The candidate shows considerable potential and is among the best in their field
  • The candidate has academic experience from several universities and/or research institutions and preferably international experience
  • The candidate is a skilled communicator
  • The candidate writes and speaks English at the academic level
  • The candidate is expected to meet the criteria for permanent employment at AAU at the end of the tenure-track process

If appointed on tenure-track, the Tenure-track assistant professors will have an annual interview with the head of department. An internal assessment committee will conduct a mid-term evaluation after 3 years, and an external assessment committee will conduct a final review after 5.5 years. If the final review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor.

Shortlisting will be applied. After the review of any objections regarding the assessment committee, the head of department, with assistance from the chair of the assessment committee, selects the candidates to be assessed.
