Description of main research theme:

The Materials Science, Energy, and Nanoengineering department at UM6P invites applications for a dedicated Assistant Professor specializing in Thin Film Materials and Surface Engineering. We are looking for a candidate with strong expertise in advanced thin film deposition, surface modification, and characterization techniques, aimed at developing innovative protective coatings and functional materials for industrial applications. The successful candidate will join a dynamic academic and research team, contributing to advancements in materials development with a focus on thin films, plasma treatments, and protective coatings.

Key responsibilities and qualifications include:

  • Conduct research on thin film deposition using physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques, including magnetron sputtering, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques,.
  • Develop thin film materials with tailored properties for applications in corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and low-friction coatings.
  • Apply low-pressure plasma treatments for surface modification such as nitriding and carburizing techniques to improve hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue life of metallic surfaces
  • Perform advanced characterization of thin films, including structural, morphological, mechanical, and chemical analyses to understand film performance under various conditions.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to address real-world challenges in protective coatings and contribute to the development of scalable solutions for wear and corrosion protection.
  • Explore interdisciplinary applications of surface engineering, including energy, medical and automotive applications.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to materials science, thin film deposition, surface engineering, and characterization techniques.
  • Supervision of master and PhD students, providing guidance on experimental techniques, data analysis, and research methodologies.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present work at international conferences.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration within the university and with external research partners.

Qualification requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Materials Science, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in material science, chemistry, electrochemistry, and surface engineering, with a focus on surface engineering techniques and their applications.
  • Proven expertise in the development of thin film materials for corrosion protection.
  • Proficiency in experimental techniques relevant to surface engineering, surface characterization (e.g., XPS, AFM, SEM, Raman spectroscopy, Hardness, scratch, friction, and roughness testing), thin film materials synthesis and processing.
  • Publication record showcasing research contributions in relevant fields such as low-pressure thin film deposition, thin film material design using physical vapor deposition, surface engineering, materials science, or related disciplines.
  • Proven teaching skills and experience supervising undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with researchers from diverse backgrounds to address interdisciplinary research questions and applications.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to write, speak, and present effectively to a wide variety of audiences including academics and industry representatives.
  • Ability to forge collaborative relationships with peers and to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders at various organizational levels

This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to research and teaching in materials science and plasma processing, with a focus on developing innovative, industry-relevant solutions in surface engineering and protective coatings.
