Position description

The Department of History in the School of Arts & Humanities at UC San Diego invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Medieval / Renaissance history, with a specialization ranging between 600 CE to 1450 CE. The successful candidate would link our faculty clusters in Ancient Mediterranean and Early Modern History. We view as desirable the ability to conduct research in a range of languages, as well as the ability to situate the lands of Mediterranean Europe in a broader nexus of connections (commercial, political, religious, and other) that extend to Northern Europe, North Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean, and perhaps Central Asia. Faculty are expected to have an inclusive approach to mentoring and advising that incorporates working with women and underrepresented undergraduate and graduate students.

The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2025. Duties include active research, graduate supervision, classroom teaching at all levels, and department and university service. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses in Medieval/Renaissance History.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Must be ABD in History or related discipline.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Must possess a PhD in History or related discipline by the time of appointment.
